Garlic Harvest

A few weeks ago Our Little Farm had a Garlic Harvest and Braiding Party. Those of us who came out harvested all the garlic for this season, which are now curing. We were also taught how to braid garlic, using another farmer's already cured bulbs. It takes two pairs of hands to do it well, but it's not that difficult once you've learnt the trick of it.

Garlic is planted in the fall to allow it to overwinter. It should be harvested in the summer when the bottom leaves have browned, and the tops are still green. For more information on harvesting and storing garlic, see this short article in Seeds of Diversity's latest newsletter.

Garlic can be braided into single (left and right), double (middle) and triple (not shown) bulbed plaits.
